3 Herbs that Can Calm Your Dog's Itchy Skin
Is your dog scratching more than usual? Itchy skin is one of the most common complaints I hear from dog owners, and it can make life miserable for both you and your pooch. The good news is that nature offers gentle, safe herbs that can bring comfort and calm. Today, I want to share three of my favourites.
Chamomile
What it does: Chamomile isn’t just for bedtime tea - it’s also a natural skin soother. You can use it in rinses, sprays, or even as a cooled tea applied gently to itchy patches.
Why it works: Chamomile contains natural compounds that reduce inflammation and calm irritation. Historically, the ancient Egyptians used chamomile in salves for skin rashes, proof this little daisy has stood the test of time.

Extra Tip
For quick relief, you can brew a weak chamomile tea, let it cool, and dab it onto itchy spots with a soft cloth. It’s a simple, gentle way to soothe your dog without harsh chemicals.
Calendula
What it does: Bright orange calendula flowers are famous for their healing touch. They’re often used in ointments or infused oils to calm irritated skin and help it repair.
Why it works: Calendula has natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Herbalists once called it “nature’s bandage” because of its reputation for soothing wounds and promoting skin healing.

Nettle
What it does: Nettle may sting in the wild, but when dried or prepared properly, it’s a powerful helper for itchy skin. Added to food as a powder, nettle works from the inside out to reduce irritation.
Why it works: Nettle is rich in nutrients like chlorophyll, vitamins, and minerals that support skin health and reduce inflammation. In medieval times, nettle was used as a spring tonic to “clean the blood,” which may explain why it helps dogs prone to seasonal itching.
