Pamper Your Pup: Winter Paw Care Tips

Winter is a magical season, but for our dogs, it can be tough on their delicate paw pads. Cold temperatures, snow, ice, and road salt can all cause dryness, cracking, and discomfort. The good news? With a few simple steps and some natural remedies, you can keep your pup’s paws healthy, soft, and comfortable all season long.

Protecting Paws from the Elements

  • Wipe after walks: Always clean your dog’s paws when they come back inside to remove salt, chemicals, or ice melt. These can irritate and dry paw pads.

  • Avoid icy surfaces: Prolonged exposure to ice and snow can cause cracking. Stick to shorter walks or choose safer routes.

  • Consider dog booties: Not every dog loves them, but booties can protect paws from cold and rough surfaces.

DIY Paw Balm Recipe

A simple paw balm helps moisturise and protect paw pads from winter’s harsh conditions. Here’s a gentle recipe you can make at home:

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup coconut oil

  • ¼ cup shea butter

  • 2 tbsp beeswax

  • 10 drops lavender essential oil (optional – soothing and calming)

Method:

  1. In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax.

  2. Remove from heat and stir in lavender oil.

  3. Pour into a small jar or tin and allow to cool.

  4. Massage a little onto clean paws before heading outside.

This balm forms a protective barrier while soothing and softening the skin.

Herbal Helpers for Winter Paw Care

Herbs can provide extra healing for dry or cracked paw pads:

  • Calendula – speeds healing of cuts and cracks

  • Chamomile – reduces inflammation and soothes irritation

  • Lavender – calms the skin and provides a gentle scent

  • Aloe vera gel – intensely moisturises and cools sore spots (always use 100% pure gel)

✨ Tip: You can make a quick herbal paw soak by steeping chamomile, calendula, or lavender in hot water, cooling it, and soaking your dog’s paws for a few minutes.
